Art Salon Inspired by Parisian culture

Art Salon inspired by Parisian culture

Five emerging artists are gearing up to share their work with the world while supporting charity at the launch of an innovative exhibition concept.

Art Salon will be officially launched on Friday 30 November, at Lapart WallSpace,

26 Helen Street, Newstead, from 6.30 – 9.30pm. (Brisbane)

The launch will feature works from five visual artists, live entertainment from belly dancing troupe Tribal Blossoms and singers The Bare Truth, as well as an open bar.

The concept behind Art Salon is to bring together groups of emerging artists on a regular basis, with the aim of gaining recognition for their work while raising funds for charity.

Art Salon founder Michelle Bowden said reading about the famous art salons of Paris in the 18th Century inspired her decision to begin exhibiting.

“I plan to hold regular Art Salon gatherings showcasing different artists and supporting a different charity each time.”

Proceeds from the bar on the opening night will benefit the Leukaemia Foundation, who offers practical help and support for families affected by leukaemia.

Leukemia has touched the lives of three of the exhibiting artists who, as part of the St Anthony’s School community, recently suffered the loss of a popular young student to the disease.

True to the spirit of the Parisian salons, the first Art Salon will feature artists who work in a variety of mediums.

While the official launch is on Friday night, the exhibition will remain open Saturday from 11 to 2pm, and Monday 3rd and Tuesday 4th of December, from 9.30 - 4pm.

MICHELLE BOWDEN

I have always loved photography anything from developing my own black and white photos to enhancing images from my digital camera. Capturing unique and different images with the camera excites me. When they are viewed on screen and you have the chance to manipulate the image is when you can really get creative. A moment in time can then take hours to get just right for presentation.

DEBORAH FELTHAM

I was drawn to carving dancers because they have such toned and well developed bodies. To me the dancers can make such beautiful forms with the way they pose. It inspires me to try and recreate the beauty, the symmetry and capture the motion. Wood too has a beauty of it's own, and you are never sure how the grain is going to come out of the piece. I like to take a block of wood and create beauty in the form of a human being.

I like to work in a mutual partnership with the medium; to ‘feel’ its properties and potential.

In that way there is perhaps less ‘control’ on my part, but rather a ‘managing’ of the artwork.

There was this particular piece I was working on recently and I accidentally left it outside for three days. When I discovered it, it had been rained on and a puddle had formed in the centre of the canvas. My husband nearly had a fit, but I figured it was meant to be. I had to work out how to pour off the water and then work with the dissolved and dispersed paint. In the end it worked out really well!

Even the most abstract of my work has been the result of lots of decision making. I need to ‘get in the zone’ and then express that mood onto the canvas. It can be quite exhausting and very messy!

Nola studied at Seven Hills college of Art in Brisbane as well as
Deakin University in Geelong Victoria. At Deakin University she did her honors thesis:

"The Interrelationship between the visual and performing arts."
