Monet's Garden

When you look at the beauty of Monet's garden you can see how it would have inspired so many paintings. In Paris in the Orangerie I was privileged to see some of the amazing water lilies paintings. Amazing! Up close you can see every brush stroke and how loose and free the application was.

2012 is shaping up to be a very interesting year. I have entered 2 of my paintings in the Linden Postcard Art Prize. They are being delivered to the Art Gallery in St Kilda today in preparation of the show. The paintings are a continuation of my turtle series. Hope you like them.

Christmas is creeping up on us and the kids are getting very excited! The holidays are the best time to get creative and arty.

Christmas cards made from cutouts and glitter, hand painted decorations and baubles hanging on the trees in the garden all make it feel Christmasy.

This is all lots of fun and very like running daily art workshops!

Meanwhile I have heaps of ideas for new paintings and can't wait to buy some new canvases and lock myself in the studio after Christmas to get creative.

So everyone have a very arty Christmas and make sure you do something that you enjoy. Bring out that inner artists and have fun!

Gala Prize winner for Artscape 2011

Artscape at Padua College this year moved to October. It was a fabulous opening night with the Franciscan Colleges Instrumental Program (FCIP) providing the musical entertainment with three bands for the night. It was a wonderful turn out for opening night with lots of diverse people from the community - parents, local businesses, politicians, artists and other lovers of art.

The art this year was amazing with many new artists coming on board. The students also exhibited many pieces - especially from the junior Artscapers. There were lots of happy people purchasing art to enhance their homes and many happy artists who sold their pieces.

I look forward to being involved again next year for the 12th version of Artscape.

Here is some pics of our stall at the Bleeding Heart Gallery markets that are held each month. That's Carry Smith setting up (check out link for her website). Our stall was the most colourful. It was a chilly day in the city so lucky there was a cafe at the gallery so we could keep warm with hot drinks!

Won't be able to make it to the markets again until November. By then we'll have some lovely pieces for Christmas presents.

Here I am painting at the Teneriffe Street Festival. The painting turned out to be quite different. Needs just a little bit of finishing off but will leave it quite raw. I started to think about the Kurilpa Bridge in Brisbane. At night they light it up so the pillars are blue.
It was a busy street festival but I missed most of it as I got quite absorbed in painting. I'll post a finished version soon.

Last Sunday was World Turtle Day. It was a great day to launch a children's book about turtles and to raise money by raffling off my latest turtle painting
"Heading Home".
Money raised is going towards signage on the dunes at Bribie Island to help protect the nesting grounds.

The book was "Timmy Turtles Dangerous Day" written by David Searle. $1 from every sale goes to Keep Australia Beautiful (http://www.kab.org.au )

Thank you for eveyone's support.

I am now working on a triptych that will feature turtles, dugongs, and dolphins all found in our beautiful Moreton Bay.

This morning at Cafe@Kitchener there was a lovely and successful fundraiser for the Breast Cancer Network Australia. The ladies (Robyn and Nicki) at the cafe did a lovely spread and the donated raffle prizes were great. Caroline and Julie did a fantastic job bringing it all together. I painted "Rising Above" and donated it to the raffle - its now on its way to the Sunshine Coast where the winner lives.

The pink flowers represent the lotus that manages to rise above the muddy waters to bloom and thrive, the silver leaf represents hope and the green is the energy that links us together searching for a cure.

Two of my close friends have been brave and courageous and won the battle against breast cancer - this painting is dedicated to them.

Summer Salon at the Richard Randall Studio Gallery

On the weekend of the 6th and 7th of November we are having a Summer Salon. The exhibition will be at the Richard Randall Studio Gallery which is a heritage listed building within the grounds of the Mt Coot-tha Botanic gardens in Toowong, Brisbane. It is a lovely light filled gallery space. Come in and view the art and chat with the artists. On Sunday see the artists in action doing demonstrations.

How time flies when you're having fun!

I started this blog to write about art, exhibitions and the artists I meet along the way. I have had a great time organising exhibitions, sharing thoughts and of course creating heaps in the last 4 years.

Its that time of year again! Already April! Artscape is nearly here so make sure you get your tickests before they are sold out. Its our 10th anniversary and to celebrate we have invited all previous feature artists back and for the first time we have a Francisican Art Prize (1st prize $1,000). Brisbane Senses Art - Rotary Arts Spectacular

The Arts Spectacular at the Riverside Centre (Brisbane CBD) opened on Thursday night. It was a great night with lots of people and art, not to mention champagne!
The Art is on display until this Saturday so if you work in the city take a lunch break and stroll down to Eagle st to check out the art.

Sarah Atkins is a Brisbane-based artist and teacher. She is mostly self-taught, although she majored in art in her undergraduate teaching studies. Sarah mostly paints abstract art pieces with acrylic on canvas. She loves vibrant colours and textures. She finds her creativity flows best when she paints to world music. Something about the earthy rhythms awakens her creative spirit.

2010 is shaping up to be a busy year. I have had three of my paintings accepted into the 31st Rotary Art Spectacular "Brisbane Senses Art" that will be shown from 18/3 Riverside Centre (Atruim Lobby) 123 Eagle St Brisbane.

Also opening 19/3 is an Art Salon exhibition "Abundance" opening at the Art Factory Gallery, Merivale St, South Brisbane.

So leading up to March I will be very busy bringing all this together and painting, painting, painting!!

Art Galleries for Art Salon

How would you prefer your galleries? I sometimes wonder about the best way to display art. The accepted colour of the walls is usually white. When GOMA (Brisbane) had their Optimism exhibition they had a room where the walls were bright green - and you know what? The art looked fantastic. The art was not created with these colour walls in mind and there was a mixture of styles, shapes and sizes.

So what colour walls should you have in a gallery? If you are looking for a piece of art to hang on your walls at home you might like to see it in a less stark environment to give you an idea of how it would fair on your wall at home. Maybe some furniture around to give you a better understanding of the scale.

What about black walls? I like the look of that.

My nests are made of wire and painted gold. Which amazingly gives them quite a natural look. They are lovely as ornamental objects or you can put things in them. The smallest size looks particularily pretty at night with a tea light burning inside. I also make ornamental polymer clay eggs in any colour you like.

Springbrook - amazing place!

Spent three days on the Springbrook plateau in a wonderful house in the rain forest. I found the rainforest very inspiring and have come home and painted three paintings that I call "Springbrook Impressions".

This weekend is our spring exhibition. Lots of colourful and unusual work to see. The location is perfect for spring. The Richard Randall Studio is situated near the entrance of the gardens overlooking the bamboo grove.

There will be paintings, photography and sculpture.

The opening is 10am on Saturday the 10th. If you are in Brisbane why not come out and have a coffee and spend some time chatting to the artists.

I am very excited to be exhibiting my latest photographic works in

"Spirit Matters"

The exhibition opens at 4pm on Saturday the 6th of December and continues until the 10th of January.
Gallery hours are 10am to 4pm Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

The exhibition involves 5 local artists: Madonna Huddy, Aprille McHenry, Andi Mutch, Kirsten Bailey and Michelle Bowden

My latest works look at our periphal vision, the outer margins, where the camera often captures things we cannot see. Is this because of our vision or education? Are we blinded by the shiny and the new and consequently missing out on seeing the depths of the world around us?

The photos all started life at Cedar Creek near Samford, a place I find inspiring and am drawn back to time and again.

Richard Goldsworthy - MUSIC FOR SOLO PIANO

Pianist and composer Richard Goldsworthy was born in Cairns, in the tropical north of Australia and spent his early childhood in the tiny rainforest village of Kuranda. Much of Richard's music is inspired by the unique beauty of Australia's natural landscape.

Richard recently spent several months traveling and performing in Japan, where much of the music for his latest CD "Silk" was composed - the fourth in his series of "Soundscapes for Solo Piano".

As the perfect accompaniment to some of life's special moments - such as a candlelit dinner, a quiet time spent alone, or a rainy day with a good book, Richard's tranquil and melodic piano is finding its way into the hearts of many lovers of fine music.

Just thought I'd give a bit more detail on our performers on the 22nd June.

After viewing all the amazing art that will be exhibited the program looks a bit like this:

DJ Mutley - very cool mixing with a very fast beat to get the night started.

Flipside Circus's kids troupe will thrill us next.

Tribal Blossoms will keep the heat up with their vibrant tribal belly-dancing.

Liam's fire twirling will warm us up after the break.

The Bare Truth are next with their acapella.

Simone Pitot will round the night off with her lovely sounds.

A very nice way to spend a wintry Sunday evening, and all for only $20.

Setting up for Plein Air at Padua
The main exhibition:

Artscape2008 at Padua College, Kedron was a great success. Fantastic gala opening on Friday night - hundreds turned out for the night.

Saturday the main exhibition was open and we also had our first Plein Air at Padua - outdoor painting competition. It was a lovely sunny day and a lovely relaxing way to spend the day.

Sunday was the college open day which attracted hundreds again - all came to check-out the exhibition in the new hall.

On Sunday we also drew the major raffle and the Peoples Choice for the Plein Air painting.

All in all it was a great weekend of art and socialising.

Hi everyone,

thought it was about time I got up to date on this blog. Artscape2008 at Padua College in association with the Rotary club of Stafford is only two weeks away. It will be bigger and better than ever. Firstly the new venue - brand new auditorium - is huge and light, holding more art and lots more light.

The Gala night is on Friday 16/5/2008, and the exhibition goes for Saturday and Sunday.

New this year is Plein Air at Padua which will transform the college grounds into an outdoor studio with artists painting on site. As you can see on the flyer.

Three Art Salon artists are exhibiting: Nola Atkins, Dave Behrens and Carry Smith.

New Artist joins Art Salon

Dave Behrens (db3) is a Brisbane based emerging artist. Self-taught, David has been painting for six years.

The conceptual drive for David’s work extends from traditional caveman art with added universal influences. Each completed canvas brings into play symbols, shapes and multiple shades of colour which are variations of the one primary colour used as the basis. David’s works have been described as “intrinsic and thought provoking yet visually spacious, with each piece telling a thousand different stories”.

Predominately using acrylic on canvas, David values art that is visually stimulating with his passion being abstract expressionism. His style comes to life in "Thinking Inside the Squares", the title he labeled his collection, due to its ability to provide the observer with the opportunity to explore and interpret the many individual paintings on the one canvas and exploit their own imagination.

What started out as a hobby back in 2002, to fill some empty spaces on his walls at home, has now become a passion to bring vibrant colour and a look that is refreshingly different to the art scene of Brisbane and the wider population.

Dave has been experimenting and exploring the possibilities of painting numerous organized paintings on the one canvas to tell the stories of a fictional world, its civilization and their values, through the use of symbolic references and combining vibrant colours & textures of acrylic paint and other medium.

“My intention is for the observer to interpret these various paintings within a painting to make their own conclusions as to the relevant meaning of each work”, say Dave, adding that “I want to stimulate the visual senses of people looking at my work and to coerce them into looking at each individual painting. My work is representational of another world, another time, yet some similarities & references to cultures and civilizations here on Earth can be found in my work, so it has some familiarity to it and in other contexts, it doesn’t”.

Dave held his first solo exhibition in March 2007 at Circle Gallery, West End and participated in several group show events with other local Brisbane artists.

Dave recently achieved his first art prize, winning the abstract section of the 2007 Maryborough Heritage Art Festival and more recently placed 3^rd in the abstract section at the Utopia Art Awards.

At last I feel I can share with everyone my plans. I have secured the studio 3 in the Old Museum in Brisbane for the next Art Salon event. It is a lovely space and really lends itself for this type of celebration. True to our charter it will show case the work of local artists both visual and performing.

It will be a ticketed event as we hope to have all costs covered, raise money for charity and perhaps have some left in the kitty!

Plans for Art Salon in 2008

Time to get back into planning our next Art Salon event to show case the arts. I would love to have a combination of visual and performance art together complementing each other.

In our group we already have some great visual artists as you have seen. At the Wallspace exhibition we also had some great performance art with Tribal Blossoms bellydance and singing by The Bare Truth. It all worked so well which is why I would like to build on that.

So in the meantime I'll be researching venues and looking for visual and performance artists that are interested in being involved.

My aim is always to keep costs as low as possible. The group exhibitions help this and increase the networking possibilities.

For now, on this blog, I will continue to share visual art, keep everyone posted on our progress, look for new networking possibilities and have some art for sale.

Friday night was our exhibition opening and it was fantastic! About 150 people turned up to enjoy the art, live entertainment and help raise funds for the Leukeamia Foundation.

Everyone was mesmorised by the Tribal Blossoms and their sword dancing and the singing by The Bare Truth in the gallery added a wonderful atmosphere. So much talent under one roof!

Art Salon inspired by Parisian culture

Five emerging artists are gearing up to share their work with the world while supporting charity at the launch of an innovative exhibition concept.

Art Salon will be officially launched on Friday 30 November, at Lapart WallSpace,

26 Helen Street, Newstead, from 6.30 – 9.30pm. (Brisbane)

The launch will feature works from five visual artists, live entertainment from belly dancing troupe Tribal Blossoms and singers The Bare Truth, as well as an open bar.

The concept behind Art Salon is to bring together groups of emerging artists on a regular basis, with the aim of gaining recognition for their work while raising funds for charity.

Art Salon founder Michelle Bowden said reading about the famous art salons of Paris in the 18th Century inspired her decision to begin exhibiting.

“I plan to hold regular Art Salon gatherings showcasing different artists and supporting a different charity each time.”

Proceeds from the bar on the opening night will benefit the Leukaemia Foundation, who offers practical help and support for families affected by leukaemia.

Leukemia has touched the lives of three of the exhibiting artists who, as part of the St Anthony’s School community, recently suffered the loss of a popular young student to the disease.

True to the spirit of the Parisian salons, the first Art Salon will feature artists who work in a variety of mediums.

While the official launch is on Friday night, the exhibition will remain open Saturday from 11 to 2pm, and Monday 3^rd and Tuesday 4^th of December, from 9.30 - 4pm.

I have always loved photography anything from developing my own black and white photos to enhancing images from my digital camera. Capturing unique and different images with the camera excites me. When they are viewed on screen and you have the chance to manipulate the image is when you can really get creative. A moment in time can then take hours to get just right for presentation.
